Overview:
Box.com (previously Box.net) is a great cloud storage provider. They have had previous promotion to get 50GB for free and have now been one of the top competitors for Dropbox. With more and more integration, Box is grabbing users through their special promotions, and some are slowly moving away from Dropbox due to the limited space for free users. We wrote an article on how Box started allowing free users to have access to the Box Desktop Sync application (http://www.pcbasics.info/apps/blog/show/18071480-box-now-offers-desktop-sync-for-free-users). One new application had started to support Box recently. Slideshark, has announced that they will now support Box integration to allow access to presentations stored in your cloud. As a special promotion for the occasion, they are having a cooperation between Box.com to offer users free 25GB of Box storage for life.  The normal sign up will only give you 5GB for free. If you think you might be using Box anytime soon, you might want to jump start your cloud with 5X more storage.

Winferno Registry Power Cleaner 2013

Posted by PCbasics on October 3, 2012 at 4:50 PM Comments comments (1)

(Credit: Winferno Software)

Overview:

This is a great commercial product to quickly find & safely repair harmful registry errors to make your computer run faster and better. It does its job simply and easily with its easy to understand graphical interface, along with its simple navigation and customization. Stabilize your PC with this easy to use program.

Review:

Winferno Registry Power Cleaner 2013 is really easy to use. It makes it simple for you to locate hard-to-find registry errors and fix them in one simple click. Fixing your registry will fix problems such as computer crashes and computer freezes. The program offers complete scanning and registry report or the option to customize your scan.

The interface of the program makes it really simple for the user to navigate. The features are split into categories so you will be able to find the feature you need without going through hundreds of menus. To customize your scan, all you have to do is check boxes to exclude keys out from the scan.

The scanning is especially fast. To complete scan only took around 1 minute on my computer. After the scan you can repair your errors and review the report on all the errors found. After repairing the errors, the program allows you to restore your registry and un-do cleaning changes in case something wrong were to happen after the repair.

Other Notable Features:

  • Protect your PC with automatic back-ups
  • Edit and Remove bothersome start-up programs that slow down your PC
  • Defragment and Optimize Registry

Product Specs:

All in all

Winferno Registry Power Cleaner 2013 is a good program. The only thing I have to say is, there are many freeware programs that do the same thing. Programs like CCleaner are a popular choice over shareware program that do the same thing. To get the most of your buck, I would stick with CCleaner, but if the developers implement more features in the future, Winferno Registry Power Cleaner 2013 wouldn't be a bad choice to go with. I rate Winferno Registry Power Cleaner 2013 with 4 stars out of 5.

Kvisoft FlipBook Maker [Review + Giveaway]

Posted by PCbasics on September 17, 2012 at 9:30 PM Comments comments (12)

(Credit: Kvisoft)

Overview:

Kvisoft FlipBook Maker is a great way to display or read PDFs online or on your computer. Have the clean interface and realistic page flipping animation as you read the converted PDF file. Change your normal boring PDF reading experience to a new height with this eye pleasing application. With this program you'll be able to select a reading theme and enjoy the page turning animations with easy navigation

Review:

The interface of Kvisoft FlipBook Maker is really nice. I love how simple and easy it is to use. The program is as simple as choosing your PDF, choosing your theme, and publishing your new creation. The theme selection is also very impressive. You will have a theme that fits any occasion you can think of. Birthdays, weddings, vacations, or holidays, Kvisoft FlipBook Maker has it all. Still not enough for you? Download their free resource that includes 100 colorful background files, 9 luxurious background files, 28 theme templates, 3 navigation buttons, and 1 kvisoft preloader. If you don't like the templates, you can always put together a full customized template with your own design. The pre-loaded templates are very well designed and professional looking. I made a quick example from one of my PDF lying around on my desktop:

http://www.pcbasics.info/screenshots/FlipBook/Files/book.swf

As you can see from the flipbook I created, it looks very nice and is very easy to navigate. The themes are sleek and provide mobile versions for easy viewing on your phones or tablets. To publish your flipbooks, you have four output options.

Publish your flipbook as an .HTML to view it in your web browser, or publish as stand-alone .EXE for CD delivery. Package it as .ZIP format for quick email or publish it for MAC executable file. Only the .HTML and .ZIP formats allow the flipbook to work on iPad/iPhone/iPod and Android mobile devices. After you publish your flipbook, you will get your results in the format you selected, ready to go. I uploaded the .HTML option on to PCb and in case you missed it, you can view it HERE.

Other Notable Features:

  • Google Analytics Integration
  • SEO Friendly
  • Buy once, use forever
  • Easy for sharing to Social networks

Product Specs:

All in All:

Kvisoft FlipBook Maker is a great program to convert PDF to Flash flipbooks without any coding at all. Its graphical interface makes it even easier to use due to its simplicity. The templates are nicely designed and all free of charge. The templates are fully customizable, from the button layout to personalized branding. Kvisoft FlipBook Maker is a great program if it suits your needs. If you are thinking of using this program to just view your PDFs from your PC, this is not a good choice. There are many freeware programs out there to customized how the PDF is viewed from your computer (Foxxit, POKAT), but if you need a program to customize the PDF look on the web, this is your product. After publishing my flipbook, all I had to do was upload the files on my server and the flipbook was ready to go. As pricing goes, this program is worth the price of $97 USD. If you will be producing multiple flipbook, ocompetitors charge either per flipbooks ar by page numbers. For unlimited flipbooks with unlimited pages, this program is a reasonable price compared to other desktop flipbook programs such as aXmag at $380 USD. I rate Kvisoft FlipBook Maker 5 stars out of 5!

Giveaway:

Thanks to May from Kvisoft Co., Ltd. to offer me 3 licenses of FlipBook Maker Standard to giveaway to our readers! Bing it On. Microsoft vs. Google...again

Posted by GoldenTouch on September 8, 2012 at 9:40 PM Comments comments (2)

Bing it On. Ever since its inception, Google's search engine has been at the forefront of the web giant's niches. In 2009, however, when Microsoft introduced Bing, Microsoft has been fighting Google tooth and nail for a fair share of the market. Although they have overtaken Yahoo! in search popularity, Google is far and away still the most used search engine. For all Microsoft has done, they really haven't cut much into Google's popularity. In 2009, when Bing was released, Google owned around 65% of the market in searches. Now, 3 years later in 2012, Google's search popularity has actually gone up. (Links here from 2009: http://tinyurl.com/yfx9pww and here from 2012:http://tinyurl.com/7cdlggc). Troubling news for Microsoft to say the least.

Now, though, Microsoft has released a new marketing campaign called "Bing it On". Like the Pepsi vs. Coke blind taste tests done years back, this is supposed to help more people in need of search results (you and me) use Bing, thus making Microsoft more money. And who doesn't like money? According to Microsoft, blind tests have favored Bing "2 to 1". To put it to the test, I decided to take the challenge.

First, I decided to search something obvious: PC Basics. With Bing, I didn't even get this website. Google wins. Please note that I actually have no idea which I am voting for.

Second, I searched for "espn". Even though both searches contained "ESPN: The Worldwide Leader In Sports" as the first link, I noticed that the link on the left contained a lot more clutter. So, I picked the right side. Turns out I picked Google.

After two rounds, Google was beating Bing. So I decided to search something I know that many of us (or at least me) do: Search conversions like "10 ft to in". Both sides gave me the answer, but one gave me a calculator in which I could edit my numbers in. Very useful. Unfortunately, in a fit of madness, I clicked on the wrong side of the page (*facedesk). So even though Bing should have won, it checked off Google.

To save your time, suffice it to say that Google still won. I searched two more items, and in a blind test, selected Google two more times. It wasn't even a contest. Until Microsoft can create a better search engine, I'll still have this to say about Bing:

But Its Not Google!

Would you like to give it a try? Take the test: http://www.bingiton.com/

Recover Lost Text on Online Forms

Posted by PCbasics on September 4, 2012 at 5:55 PM Comments comments (2)

Lazarus: Form Recovery is one of the most useful addons to Firefox and Google Chrome. If you spend a lot of time online and spend lots of time typing and filling in forms, Lazarus will become one of your favorite addons. Countless times I have lost hours of time filling out an online form. This addon will work on most text fields in the web browser. I have spent hours writting reviews of software online, and the browser crashes before I get to save. Luckily if you have Lazarus, the addon will automatically save all typed text and recover it with a click of a button. No matter what happens, browser crash, server time out, or even a computer crash. All you have to do is re-open the page you were at, and click the Lazarus icon and choose the text you want to recover. Magically the text that you typed before the accident reappears and no time is lost.

It's very simple, but it's a life saver for all my time spent online typing. Lazarus does also offer some additional options to make it more convenient.

Customize the addon by changing how long forms are stored, require passwords to access the saved forms, enable Lazarus in private browsing, and more. To get Lazarus: Form Recovery here to install the browser addon:

Compatible with Firefox, Chrome, and Safari

Permanently Delete a File [Tip]

Posted by PCbasics on August 30, 2012 at 2:45 AM Comments comments (2)

Many PC users delete files simply by right-clicking and clicking "Delete" or select a file and hit the "Delete" button. But what some people may not know is that those files are still on your computer, in the recycle bin. There are benefits of sending items to your recycle bin, such as allowing you to restore the deleted item. What if you emptied the recycle bin? Still there are plenty of third party programs that are capable or recovering "deleted" files. So is there really a way to permanently delete a file? Yes. Its a really easy tip to remember, just select the file(s) and click "Shift + Delete" and you will get a confirmation if you really want to permanently delete the file(s) from your computer. That's it! Clear up space on your HDD without using expensive third party programs to permanently delete your files.

Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate for Windows [Review + Giveaway]

Posted by PCbasics on August 29, 2012 at 2:00 AM Comments comments (11)

(Credit: Aimersoft)

Overview:

Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate for Windows is a easy to use program to convert your videos into many different output formats. With 50+ popular video & audio formats, you can be sure this program con convert any video you throw at it. Whether you are converting a video for your phone, iPod, or any other mobile device, Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate has it all.

The program is a very easy and straight forward program to use. In three steps you will have you video converted to whatever format you want. Add the file, select the format, and click convert. Simple and easy to use. The interface of the program is not very original, but it is graphical and easy to understand. The design is similar to other brands such as WinX, Daniusoft, Wondershare, etc. which isn't very bad... but repetative. The quality of the conversion is a bit lower than the actual conversion. I tried a 5 minute video and the time to convert was around 6 minutes. The speed of the conversion is alright, not super fast, but for the price, it should be faster. For a video converter there are many freeware programs that have similar features, but if you want the most video formats supported Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate this is the way to go.

Other features of Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate include the ability to download online streaming video. No need for browser addons, just copy and paste the video URL and download videos from popular sites like YouTube, CNN, PBS, Yahoo, Google, and more. The program also has the ability to rip DVDs from your CD-Rom drive. Save your favorite movies to iPad, iPod, iPod touch 3, iPod nano 5, Zune, iPhone, iPhone 3GS, OS 3.1, iPhone 4(4G), Apple TV, PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, Archos, Sandisk, Motorola Droid/Cliq, Google nexus one, iRiver, Creative Zen, PMP, MP4/MP3 Player, Smart Phone, Pocket PC, PDA, Mobile Phone, and more! I have to say that the video downloader did not work for me. I tried downloading videos from YouTube, but I kept on recieving errors, but the recorder worked very well. The recorder was able to record the YouTube and then I was able to crop and edit some minor things with the final video.

All in All:

The program is a very great and useful program, don't get me wrong. But, it still need improvement in my opinion. The price is a bit to high compared to similar freeware programs that can perform similar if not most of the tasks. I would say that all the formats it supports are impressive, but not having the speed and high quality as competitors, is a bummer to the program. I'm sure this program is wonderful for "normal" everyday conversions, but if you are looking for high quality 1080p videos, I'm going to have to say this program may not be satisfying to you. For the uses that I may use, the program is great. If you looking for a converter for YouTube, home movies, or for you mobile devices, this definitely is a must have for all your video conversion need. I rate Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate for Windows 4 out of 5 stars.

Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office

(Credit: AppsCare)

Overview:
Google Cloud Connect for MS Office is a great tool for anyone. If you have ever used Google Docs, you will know that it is a great web app that can be used anywhere. Google docs allows you to store as many Google Doc format files as you want. As a free user, you get 1024 MB of free space for other file formats. 1024 MB of space can hold quite a handfull of documents that can be accessed from the cloud. It may not seem alot of space but I have 30 Word/Exel/Power Point files in the Google docs and I have used only 1% of my free storage space.

The addon for MS office is a great tool for backing up your work in the cloud. Retrieve them from any internet accessible device and edit them in the cloud. The document is saved whenever you save the office document. The addon then uploads the project after the hard copy has been saved directly on your computer, having two locations in which your document is stored.

The app generates a special link that connects directly to the online version. You can access and edit the document directly from the link if you are signed in to the same account as the Google Cloud Connect app is. The addon also alows you to see if the current open project is uploaded to the cloud. When changes are made to the document, you must save the project in order to have the file in the cloud update also. There is also a share feature in which the document's permission can be set to public or private.

There's even more! Watch the Google Cloud Conect video to see even more feature:

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

Google Handwrite on iPad, iPhone, or Other Mobile Devices

Posted by PCbasics on August 25, 2012 at 5:20 PM Comments comments (0)

Google Handwrite. A new concept by Google to let you search without typing on the keyboard. In my opinion, this is even slower than typing, but hey, some people may like it better or want a change other than typing it the old fashion way. The whole concept was designed for tablets and smartphones and worked best on Chrome, now its compatible wih Mobile Safari as well. Below you can check out the concept video:

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

To enable Google Handwrite, head on over to the Google homepage. Then click on settings icon -> "Search Settings" -> "Handwrite" -> "Enable". Once enabled click on the Handwrite icon in the bottom right corner. Then, start writing.

Box Now Offers Desktop Sync For Free Users

Posted by PCbasics on August 15, 2012 at 5:30 PM Comments comments (2)

Box (previously Box.net) has now allowed personal accounts to download the Box Desktop Sync client. Previously, only upgraded accounts (Business or Enterprise) could have this feature. The news about a desktop client has been a huge excitement because people may now be switching from Dropbox to Box. Although you only get 5GB at initial sign up, recent offers and promotions for Box have allowed free uses to get up to 50GB of cloud storage for free. Although I have got 10GB of Dropbox storage for free, 5x more storage is tempting. Dropbox does have more integration with 3rd party programs, but Box integration is increasing. One of the largest disadvantages of Box, is its upload size limit. With Dropbox, upload size limit is none, while Box is 100MB. Another disadvantage with Box was its Desktop Sync. Now that Box has made it availible for free users, the switch from Dropbox to Box are coming closer.

The client is fairly simple to set up, only having 2 steps after installation to have it up and running. Signing in to your Box account and syncing with your cloud account. After that is finished, just drag and drop files you want to be uploaded to the cloud.

To get Box Desktop Sync, Sign into your Box account and go "My Account" -> "Get Box Sync"

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

Don't have a Box account? Sign up for 5GB of free cloud storage: https://www.box.com/signup/personal/

Watch out Dropbox. Box is coming for you.

Microsoft Getting Rid of Hotmail?

Over the past couple of years (actually, more than a couple), there have been only three major email services: Gmail, Yahoo! mail, and Hotmail. Having used all three of them, I think it's safe to say that Hotmail was by far the worst one of the three (and no, I'm not going to start an email war here by sharing which is my fave). But with Microsoft's new release of Outlook.com, could that all change?

It certainly could. I've used and played around with the new Outlook.com, and it definitely looks a lot cleaner and is much easier to use. Unfortunately, it really doesn't have that much of a "wow" factor, as seen below.

Is it possible that Microsoft has come out with a gmail or Yahoo! mail killer? While I seriously doubt it, we'll all have to just wait and see.

Hey PCbasics Community!

I have been invited to write for PCbasics blog. As an avid reader of PCbasics, I have been following this site for some time and know what a wonderful site this is. As a co-author, I'll mostly be writing about the latest tech news and also be posting on the Forums. Hopefully, I'll be able to add another dimension to this wonderful site other than just software. It is an honor to be writing for PCbasics, and I hope you know that you will always be receiving my best work.

Thanks,

GoldenTouch
